This is so sad. He was my favorite Mahler conductor, bar none. I think his Mendelssohn 4th symphony recording with the London Symphony Orchestra is just magnificent. I love the giddy energy in that performance and the beautiful lyrical melody lines he brought out in it. It is truly an "Italian" symphony. He will be sorely missed. I had always hoped he would record Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde". I know there was a video of his performance of that work on the Berlin Philharmonic website but I am not a digital subscriber.
